Thirty years ago, an illegally modified android led an armed attack on a pro-human rally, leaving nearly a hundred people dead. The android, “Harriet,” claimed to be sentient, and all tests failed to prove her wrong. The hacker responsible, Grace Nguyen, was offered years off her sentence in exchange for each sentient android she’d created, in hopes of discovering a way to limit android intelligence and agency.
Five years out of prison, Grace is co-director of android rights organization Animus. Her partner is Swan, celebrity artist turned social activist, secretly her final android daughter. When her home city is rocked by a rogue android’s massacre, she begins to question Swan’s motives and new alliance with violent extremists Sons of Man. Facing outrage, a deadly illness, and increasingly militant law enforcement, can Grace keep her past from repeating itself?
